Keynote Speaker, Marshall Raskind, delivered an engaging and insightful address titled The Truth is Out There: Reflections on LD Research during the 2 nd Annual Doctoral SPEDDR Conference on January 15 th, 2008 in Santa Barbara. Dr. Raskind, Director of Research and Special Projects at the Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation, offered guidance on the path to professionalism to a roomful of budding researchers; urging us to lend a scrutinious eye to research and advising on how to weather the publishing and funding hurdles. His talk overviewed successful attributes of persons with LD, such as perseverance, proactivity, goal setting, support systems, and emotional coping strategies. And, named potential directions for future research: working memory, talents/creativity, virtual reality, internet, collaboration with industry, and scalability. His work resonates throughout our field: across research and practice, age, grade, and academic discipline. In reflecting on his words of wisdom, The Truth is Out There, we depart with the feeling that We –the next generation- Believe and thus continue the search for answers.
